Roy and Maureen

Roy was born in Croydon. Attended Selhurst Grammar and as a talented youngster went to Trinity College of Music to study piano. In his younger days he won many competitions in swimming, diving and cycling, representing Croydon against Eindhoven, Holland, when he was 10 years old. Also, he was Southern Region Men’s AAA.

Roy had an accident and broke his neck. He was paralysed for months, and eventually bought an accordion to strengthen his arm and neck. This started him back on the music trail. He had many different jobs, including a policeman, in which he earned colours for swimming in Police Competitions.
Maureen always loved singing and won many competitions as a child. In 1970, Roy married Maureen. Music was in both their hearts, and even though Maureen did not want to sing professionally, eventually that is what happened.

Roy and Maureen left England in the early 1970’s and went to Mallorca to find work and found so much work playing and singing for the holidaymakers in the hotels on the island as “ROY and MO”
In 1974, back to England supposedly to spend time with the families but were sent to Germany where they played and sang at many American military bases. Later to France for the next 12 years, even though during that time they worked in Spain, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Guadeloupe in the West Indies. In 1984, they performed in Jersey and worked there for a total of three years, during which time they won a Variety Club Award. Eventually, they moved back to England, to buy a house in Portsmouth.
In 1992, they were booked as the resident band in the Rothesay Hotel in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, Scotland. From 1986 onwards, Roy and Mo played the clubs and pubs around the Portsmouth in between trips elsewhere until Roy’s untimely death in 2010.
