The Portsmouth Jazz Appreciation Society began in 1972 by John Cervenka, who ran the Orpheus Record Shop in Marmion Road, Southsea, at the Rose in June in Copnor Road on the first Wednesday of each month.
It morphed into the 'Concert Club' featuring live jazz with Bobby Wellins as the first guest, help at the Pompey Supporters Club. With the cessation of a grant from Portsmouth Council the Concert Club lapsed after promoting Jessica Williams at the Menuin Suite, Portsmouth Central Library.
Using accrued funds it resurfaced in 2004 as 'Portsmouth Jazz Society' and later as Portsmouth Jazz, beginning with Stan Tracey Quartet on October 4th.
