Farlington Tradtional Jazz Club closed last night (9th May 1958) on a high not and it was played by the almost legendary trumpet idol of the 1930's, Nat Gonella, writes Spinner.
Nat, Farlington's first traditional guest star, was playing at the club's last session before it finishes for the summer.
Accompanied by the Sunshine Jazz men, the regular group, he produced the power, attack and humour which made him one of Britain's greatest jazz names.
His trumpet still has the " Satchmo " influence and so does his gravel voice these were the two qualities which gained him the title of `Britain's Louis Armstrong' before World War II.
After the war Nat faded into obscurity but, recently a number of critics among them Humphrey Lyttieton have been praising his trumpet work and questioning his absence from the jazz scene.
In the past few weeks, however, Nat has made a comeback and It was obvious at Farlirigton last night that there is still a quart of jazz in the pint- sized trumpet player.
Accompanying hlm were Doug Wheeler (trombone), Denny Putman (trumpet), Red Cresdee (clarlnet). Chiz Bishop (piano), Mike Kaye (drums),and Sammy Seall (bass).
